Standard Rate Turn
Definition
A Standard Rate Turn is one where the pilot completes a 360° turn in 2 minutes or 3° per second. A rule of thumb to determine the approximate angle of bank required is 15% of the true airspeed. For example, approximately 15% of bank is required when traveling 100 knots (100 x 15% = 15).
A Standard Rate Turn is an important manoeuvre when accidentally flying into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). Complete a Rate One Turn (180° in one minute) to fly directly out of IMC and return home.
