Cessna 150 Normal, Short Field & Soft Field Takeoff Cheatsheet

Most student pilots learn to fly in the Cessna 150 aircraft.  During my training, I found it extremely helpful to have a cheatsheet of procedures.  This article is a simple Takeoff Procedures cheatsheet for Cessna 150 Takeoff Procedures based on the 1976 150 Commuter Model 150M Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH).

Cessna 150 Takeoff Procedures

Normal Takeoff

  • Wing Flaps - 0˚

  • Carburetor Head - COLD

  • Throttle - FULL OPEN

  • Elevator Control - LIFT NOSE WHEEL @ 50 KIAS

  • Climb Speed - 60 - 70 KIAS

Short Field Takeoff (Maximum Performance Takeoff)

  • Wing Flaps - 0˚

  • Use All Available Runway

  • Carburetor Head - COLD

  • Brakes - APPLY

  • Throttle - FULL OPEN

  • Brakes - RELEASE

  • Elevator Control - SLIGHTLY TAIL LOW, LIFT NOSE WHEEL @ 50 KIAS

  • Climb Speed - 60 KIAS (WITH OBSTACLE AHEAD)

Soft Field Takeoff

  • Wing Flaps - 10˚

  • Carburetor Head - COLD

  • Elevator Control - FULL AFT DURING TAXI & INITIAL TAKEOFF ROLL

  • Throttle - FULL OPEN

  • Elevator Control - AS NOSE LIFTS OFF, REDUCE ELEVATOR SLIGHTLY

  • As aircraft becomes airborne - LEVEL OFF IN GROUND EFFECT TO ACCELERATE TO Vx

  • Climb Speed - 60 - 70 KIAS
